When the room sets your distance

A 70–200 is not a default wedding purchase. It is a distance solution.

At a ceremony, reception or stage you may not be free to walk closer. If your standard zoom repeatedly leaves the subject too small from the position you are allowed to use, a fast telephoto becomes a practical second lens rather than a checklist item.

When f/2.8 is already the limit

Then add a fast prime at a focal length you already trust.

A fast prime can buy more light and a different rendering, but it also removes zoom flexibility. It earns a place when your own work says 35mm or 50mm is where you want to be—not because a generic wedding checklist says you need primes.

Before buying another lens

Look at the sequence of the job.

If groups are always too tight, wider coverage matters before a faster prime. If low light is the only recurring failure and framing is already right, aperture may be the next spend. If distance is the problem, the telephoto path earns its place. If nothing important failed, keep the kit and strengthen backup instead.
