Buy enough body for action. Keep enough budget for reach.

The camera still needs dependable continuous autofocus and burst performance. But if the subject is distant, the lens is often what decides whether you come home with a usable frame or a tiny car surrounded by track.

If autofocus is keeping up and the car is simply too small, start by looking at a longer compatible lens. If framing is already right, do not buy more reach just because this is a motorsport page.

When 200mm is already enough

At night, aperture can be the better spend.

A 70–180 or 70–200 f/2.8 solves a different problem from a 100–400. Choose this path when you already like the framing and want more light at the shutter speed you need.

Before replacing the body

A blurry car is not automatically an autofocus problem.

If you wanted a sharp freeze, protect shutter speed first. If the fence is sharp and the car is soft, revisit focus. If you are panning, some background blur is the point.
