Blur is not one problem.

A frozen car and a good pan require opposite shutter decisions. Diagnose motion, focus, framing and exposure separately before buying anything.

The car is the sharp priority. If this is the look you wanted and the car is blurred, protect shutter speed before changing autofocus at random.

The background blur is deliberate. If the whole car dissolves too, move back toward a faster shutter and rebuild smooth tracking.

Second: diagnose the miss

Show me what is sharp.

The sharp part of the frame usually tells you which control to change next—and whether any purchase is justified.

01Background sharp. Car blurred.

Likely subject motion. Raise shutter speed for a freeze shot.

Focus likely acquired the wrong plane. Acquire earlier and change AF area/tracking behaviour.

Three controls before shopping

Shutter. Focus. Tracking.

FREEZE

Protect shutter speed first.

Start around 1/1000 sec for a conventional freeze and move faster if the car still shows unwanted subject motion.

  • AF-C / Servo / continuous autofocus
  • Short controlled bursts
  • Let ISO rise before sacrificing the shutter the shot requires

PAN

Do not jump straight to 1/30.

Begin around 1/250 or 1/200, establish smooth movement, then work toward 1/125, 1/80 or 1/60 as keeper rate improves.

  • Acquire before the ideal frame
  • Follow through after the burst
  • Judge the car, not the blurred background
AUTOFOCUS

Use focus that keeps updating.

Sony/Nikon commonly call it AF-C; Canon commonly uses Servo AF. There is no universal best focus-area size.

  • Acquire early
  • Use a zone/tracking area you can keep on the car
  • Use vehicle recognition where supported and tested

Through a fence

Make the fence less dominant—without crossing the barrier.

Where safely and legally permitted, move the front of the lens closer to the fence without crossing it, focus well beyond it, use a wider aperture where appropriate and use a longer focal length when the composition allows.

Never put a camera/lens through a safety barrier, block other spectators or enter restricted areas for a cleaner frame.

Lens-to-fence distance · aperture · focal length / subject distance. Each frame should retain settings and physical-distance notes.

f/2.8
Night race

A bright circuit can still be dark at 1/1000.

Set the shutter the photograph requires, open the aperture as appropriate, then let ISO rise to maintain exposure. An f/2.8 telephoto admits more light than an f/5.6–8 lens at the same shutter speed and ISO. That is the aperture advantage; full-frame format itself does not make f/2.8 “brighter.”

If artificial lights create exposure bands, test anti-flicker/high-frequency-flicker options, different shutter speeds and shutter modes. Electronic shutter can also distort fast-moving objects on bodies with slower readout, so test the actual camera rather than applying an “always electronic” rule.
